Tebboune :France’s Support of Morocco’s So-Called “Autonomy Plan” for Western Sahara, “Grave Mistake”

ALGIERS – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has condemned France’s endorsement of Morocco’s so-called “autonomy plan” for Western Sahara, calling it a “grave mistake” that contradicts France’s responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Tebboune emphasized that as a guarantor of international legality, France should uphold the principles of decolonization rather than support a unilateral proposal that disregards the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
The Algerian president’s remarks come amid growing criticism of France’s position, which aligns with Morocco’s claims over the occupied territory while ignoring UN resolutions advocating for a referendum on self-determination.
Western Sahara remains on the UN list of non-self-governing territories, and France’s backing of Rabat’s proposal undermines international efforts to reach a just and lasting solution based on international law.
