Sudan: Cholera Kills 70 in Two Days Amid Health System Collapse in Khartoum

PORT SUDAN – A cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of 70 people in just two days in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, as the city’s healthcare system continues to collapse, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

According to a ministry statement, 942 new infections and 25 deaths were recorded on Wednesday, following 1,177 cases and 45 deaths reported the previous day, Tuesday. The ministry had already warned of a significant surge in cholera cases earlier this week, with 2,729 infections and 172 deaths recorded in just one week — 90% of them in Khartoum State.

Authorities say that 89% of patients placed in isolation are currently recovering. However, they express growing concern over the limited access to clean water, which is fueling the spread of the epidemic.
