South Korean Court Overturns Arrest Warrant for Suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol

A South Korean court revoked the arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol on Friday, paving the way for his possible release after nearly two months in detention on charges of insubordination and briefly imposing martial law.

The court stated that its decision was based on the expiration of Yoon’s initial detention period and legal concerns regarding the investigation process.

Yoon’s legal team welcomed the ruling, arguing that it reaffirmed the rule of law in South Korea. However, his release is not immediate, as prosecutors retain the right to appeal the court’s decision.

Yoon was arrested on January 15 for allegedly inciting rebellion by imposing martial law for six hours in December, before retracting the decision following parliamentary rejection. The Constitutional Court is expected to rule soon on whether to remove him from office permanently.
