Russian Gas Supplies to Europe Almost ‘Impossible’ After Jan. 1, Slovak Premier

Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s opposition to continued natural gas transit through Ukraine, warning that it could make Russian gas supplies to Western Europe nearly impossible by January 1, 2025. Fico, who recently visited Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasized that Ukraine’s stance poses a threat to Slovakia’s energy security.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Fico shared that during his meeting with Putin, the Russian president confirmed Russia’s readiness to continue supplying gas to Slovakia and the West. However, he stressed that Zelenskyy’s position would hinder these supplies in the near future. Fico also condemned Zelenskyy’s support for sanctions on Russia’s nuclear program, which he argued could have adverse economic effects on Slovakia, particularly affecting the country’s nuclear energy production.
The leaders also discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and preparations for Russia’s May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow. Fico confirmed his intention to attend the event.
