President Tebboune Highlights Algeria’s Food Security and Agricultural Development

ALGIERS – On Tuesday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a ceremony at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Union of Algerian Farmers (UNPA). The occasion coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Algerian Liberation Revolution.

In his speech, Tebboune praised the efforts of Algerian farmers, emphasizing their patriotism and dedication, particularly during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to global food shortages. He recognized the farmers’ vital role in maintaining food security and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and ensuring sustainability. He pointed out that modern agricultural techniques and the support for young agronomists and small enterprises would be key in reducing Algeria’s reliance on oil revenues and achieving self-sufficiency in strategic crops.

Tebboune also highlighted measures taken by the government to support farmers, including increased subsidies for basic agricultural products, fertilizers, and connecting agricultural sites to the electrical grid. He expressed confidence that the agricultural sector, with its vast potential and ongoing modernization, could achieve food security in the near future. Finally, he called for greater mobilization from farmers, breeders, and youth involved in agriculture to continue the country’s agricultural revival.
