Polls open for presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana

ACCRA – Presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana began on Saturday, with the two main contenders, Vice President and former central bank governor Mahamudu Bawumia, and former opposition president John Mahama, facing off in what is expected to be a tight race.
Polling stations opened at 07:00 GMT and will close at 17:00 GMT, with full results of the presidential election anticipated by Tuesday.
Voters are selecting a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is stepping down after serving two terms, as well as 276 members of parliament.
Since 1992, the two dominant parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have alternated in power nearly equally.
On Thursday, the presidential candidates signed a peace pact committing to maintaining calm before, during, and after the elections.
