PM Giorgia Meloni is due to meet President Xi Jinping on Monday to “relaunch” bilateral relations

BEIJING – Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, aiming to “relaunch” bilateral relations.

Arriving in Beijing on Saturday, Ms. Meloni is making her first, five-day, trip to China since taking office in 2022, endeavouring to “relaunch bilateral relations in sectors of common interest”, indicated an Italian government source.

On Sunday, Ms. Meloni met Chinese Premier, Li Qiang, and signed a three-year plan to boost economic cooperation between the two nations, and stressed the need to “ensure that commercial relations are balanced and mutually beneficial.”

The Italian Prime Minister described her trip as a “demonstration of the will to begin a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation”, and added that the two sides have signed a cooperation agreement on electric vehicles and renewable energy.

On his part, Premier Li said in a statement released by his office, that the two countries aim to increase a “mutually beneficial cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in the fields of shipbuilding, aerospace, new energy, and artificial intelligence.”
