Over 150,000 evacuated as flooding intensifies in northern Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR – More than 150,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as flooding intensified in several northern states of Malaysia, according to official reports on Sunday.
The number of evacuees sheltered in temporary relief centres had reached 152,377 by Sunday morning, as reported by the official news agency Bernama.
Pahang is the latest state to be impacted by severe flooding.
Kelantan has been the most severely affected, with 96,743 people evacuated, according to the National Disaster Management Agency.
Around 35,000 people have been displaced in Terengganu, with additional evacuations reported in seven other states.
The Department of Irrigation and Drainage warned that five major rivers remain above dangerous levels but are showing signs of receding.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains will continue through Sunday in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perak.
