Mpox Virus Continues to Spread Worldwide, Warns WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a new report indicating that the Mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox) continues its global spread.
“In June 2024, a total of 934 new laboratory confirmed cases of mpox and four deaths were reported to WHO from 26 countries, illustrating continuing transmission of mpox across the world,” states the report published on Monday.
The report specifies that “567 cases of Mpox have been reported in the African Region, the Region of the Americas (175 cases), the European Region (100 cases), the Western Pacific Region (81 cases) and the South-East Asia Region”
It was noted in the report that “As reporting from countries to WHO has been declining, the current reported global data most likely underestimate the actual number of mpox cases.”
The document further mentions that “96% of confirmed cases in the African Region have been reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).”
The disease, for which no specific treatment method exists, is managed with antiviral medications.
