The Algerian government has decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect, leaving the responsibility of diplomatic representation to the chargé d’affaires.
The decision came following France’s recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan, as “the only resort” for resolving the Western Sahara conflict, within the framework of an alleged sovereignty of Morocco, indicates Tuesday a press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The French government ended up giving its frank and categorical support to the colonisation imposed on Western Sahara. This unprecedented step is taken only by the current government without measuring all the potential repercussions,” specifies the same source.
“By recognizing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only resort for resolving the Western Sahara conflict within the framework of an alleged sovereignty of Morocco, the French government therefore, violates international law, denies the Sahrawi people right to self-determination, ignores all the United Nations efforts to the decolonization of Western Sahara and neglects the responsibilities it must assume as a permanent member of the Security Council,” underlines the press release.
Consequently, “the Algerian government has decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect. The Algerian diplomatic representation in France is now the responsibility of a chargé d’affaires,” adds the same source.
