Kremlin denies reports of Trump-Putin call, dismisses media claims as “fiction”

MOSCOW – The Kremlin denied on Monday reports that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and cast the media reports as “pure fiction.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov added that Putin has no specific plans to speak to Trump at the present.

The Washington Post reported earlier that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the situation in Ukraine.

Trump has long criticised the scale of U.S. military and financial support for Kyiv, vowing to end the war quickly, without saying how.

On Friday, Putin’s press secretary stated that the Russian president is open to dialogue with Trump, though he emphasised that no concrete developments could be discussed for the time being.

During Thursday’s plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin congratulated Trump on his presidential election victory and expressed no objection to contacting him. Trump, however, told NBC that he had not yet spoken with the Russian leader but believed such a call was highly likely.
