Iraq Shopping Mall Fire Death Toll Rises to 63, with 40 Injured

The death toll from the fire that erupted at a shopping center in the city of Kut, eastern Iraq, has reached at least 63 fatalities and 40 injuries, according to reports from the Iraqi news agency on Thursday. A medical source cited by the agency confirmed that “the massive fire” in the commercial center located in Wasit Governorate resulted in these tragic outcomes.

Previously, a report from the governor of Wasit province indicated that approximately 61 people had perished in the blaze at Hyper Mall, which ignited on Wednesday evening. Ambulances continued to transport victims until 4 AM, filling the beds of a hospital in Kut, situated about 160 km southeast of Baghdad, as reported by the news agency.

In expressing his condolences, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid emphasized the necessity of launching an investigation into the incident, identifying the circumstances, and holding those responsible accountable. He urged relevant authorities “to adhere to professional safety procedures and follow established guidelines to prevent such unfortunate incidents from recurring.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mohammed Chia al-Sudani ordered the deployment of a medical team equipped with all necessary resources to support rescue efforts and treat the injured. He also issued urgent directives regarding the Kut fire, commanding an immediate investigation into its causes and circumstances.
