Former U.S. Envoy : Trump Aims for Peace in Ukraine, Eyes Nobel Prize

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst has suggested that President-elect Donald Trump is likely to make a strong effort to establish peace between Russia and Ukraine. “We will probably see a strong attempt by Trump to make a truce or maybe even promote real peace. That’s his hope, and we are already seeing elements of his initiative,” Herbst stated. He added that a successful peace effort could earn Trump a Nobel Peace Prize.

Herbst noted divisions within Trump’s team regarding the approach to Russia and Ukraine. While some believe allowing Russia to dominate Ukraine could damage Trump’s reputation even more than Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, others in the team hold contrasting views and express them openly. Herbst’s remarks suggest key figures such as Vice President Pence and Elon Musk may be involved in these discussions, though he did not explicitly name them.

The former ambassador also speculated that Trump might reconsider his involvement if the peace process poses significant political risks. He indicated that the influence of the MAGA wing could lead Trump to avoid a potential “Afghan-style trap.” However, Herbst acknowledged the complexities of public scrutiny, a factor that could significantly shape Trump’s approach to the issue.
