EU’s Borrell calls for immediate ceasefire as Lebanon stands on “the brink of collapse”

BEIRUT – The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borell called on Sunday for an “immediate ceasefire” in Lebanon, during his visit to the Lebanese capital for talks with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

“We see only one possible way ahead: an immediate ceasefire and the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701,” Borell said.

The EU’s foreign policy chief warned that Lebanon is “on the brink of collapse,” following the Zionist escalation over the past two months.

Speaking at a news conference in Beirut, Josep Borell also urged Lebanese leaders to pick a president to end a two-year crisis in the country. Moreover, he pledged 200 million euros ($208m) in support for Lebanon’s armed forces.

Borrell is on a five-day trip across the Middle East, visiting Jordan, Cyprus, and Lebanon.
