European Commissioner Teresa Ribera Labels Gaza Situation as “Genocide”

European Commissioner Teresa Ribera on Thursday described the situation in Gaza as a “genocide,” expressing deep concern over the inaction of the 27 EU member states in addressing the dire humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian enclave, which continues to suffer under the devastating impacts of the Zionist occupation. Ribera is the first European Commission official to publicly adopt such a strong characterization.

“The genocide in Gaza exposes Europe’s failure to act and speak with one voice, even as protests spread across European cities,” Ribera stated.

Responses from EU member states have been deeply divided since the outbreak of the violent conflict, effectively paralyzing any coordinated European action on the matter.

In late June, the European Commission concluded that the Zionist entity had violated an article of the EU association agreement requiring respect for human rights. In reaction, the Commission proposed suspending certain European funding for Zionist start-ups. However, the measure has yet to secure approval from member states, despite weeks of ongoing negotiations.
