EU Liberals Crack Down on Right-Wing Movements Amid US Republican Surge

The rise of right-wing political forces in Europe has intensified, following the success of Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the United States. European elites, concerned by the growing popularity of anti-establishment views, are taking decisive steps to counteract these movements. This shift is in response to common grievances among right-wing voters, such as disillusionment with the political elite, the rising cost of living, migration, and economic insecurity.
In Germany, over 100 lawmakers from various factions in the Bundestag have proposed a motion to ban the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, citing concerns over its anti-democratic behavior. The move follows the collapse of Germany’s coalition government, prompting the need for swift action before the snap election in 2025. The AfD has been under surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which classified it as a “suspected right-wing extremist case.”
Meanwhile, in France, Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Rally, is facing legal challenges. A Paris prosecutor has called for a five-year prison sentence and a five-year ban from public office, accusing Le Pen and others of embezzling EU funds. This legal action could bar her from running in the 2027 presidential election.
