EU Considers Reducing Staff at Missions Worldwide Due to Budget Constraints

The European Union is contemplating reducing staff at its diplomatic missions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, according to a report by Politico on Thursday.

The move, driven by budgetary pressures, is part of an effort to align the EU’s diplomatic network with new policy priorities. Currently, the EU operates 145 missions worldwide, but the proposed plan could result in significant staff cuts, particularly in countries like Sudan and Niger.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) has reportedly exceeded its 2024 budget, with financial challenges expected to intensify next year due to rising costs and inflation. This has led to the proposal to trim the diplomatic workforce, a decision that has raised concerns about the EU’s diminishing influence in regions like Africa and Latin America.

Some officials worry that such cuts could create an opportunity for countries like Russia and China to expand their presence and influence in these areas.

The potential cuts will be discussed in December by the new European Commission, including by Kaja Kallas, the recently appointed High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The decision is expected to have a significant impact on the EU’s global diplomatic efforts in the coming years.
