Ethiopia: Over 7.2 Million Children Out of School Due to Insecurity

In Ethiopia, more than 7.2 million children are currently out of school due to ongoing conflicts and insecurity, underscoring a serious crisis in the education sector, according to Education Minister Berhanu Nega.

He expressed this concern during a meeting focused on education, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to address this distressing situation.

“The conditions of conflict and insecurity poison the minds of children and youth, hindering their future development,” the minister stated, as reported by the public broadcaster Fana.

Arega Kebede, president of the Amhara region in the north, pointed out that his area is one of the regions significantly affected by the lack of educational opportunities due to safety concerns.

According to him, while the regional government had initially aimed to enroll 7 million students for the current academic year, only 2.8 million have been registered so far.

Kebede called for collaborative efforts to repair the damage inflicted on educational institutions in the region.
