Death Toll from Storm ‘Trami’ in Philippines Rises to 76

The death toll from extensive floods and landslides triggered by a tropical storm that hit northern Philippines on Thursday has climbed to 76.

The Philippine Civil Defense Authority reported in a statement that the fatalities and injuries resulted from landslides, flooding, and other storm-related incidents, particularly in the Bicol region, which has been subjected to heavy rainfall.

In a separate announcement, the Philippine government revealed that nearly 240,000 individuals have sought refuge in evacuation centers. Additionally, 7,510 travelers are stranded at ports, and 36 flights were canceled today.

Authorities had previously reported at least 46 deaths linked to the tropical storm.

The storm is currently advancing toward Vietnam; however, meteorological officials have warned that it may stall near the coast next week.

In response to the crisis, Philippine authorities have swiftly deployed motorboats to rescue villagers who are trapped, with some taking refuge on rooftops. The government has also suspended classes and closed offices, except for those essential to disaster response efforts.
