Danish Defense Minister: Talks of Deploying Troops to Ukraine Are Premature

Denmark’s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated on Monday that discussions about deploying Danish troops to Ukraine are premature, according to Danish broadcaster DR. Poulsen dismissed the idea of Danish military involvement in Ukraine, emphasizing that peace negotiations have not yet begun and that it is too early to speculate about maintaining peace after a potential agreement.

His remarks come as European leaders gather in Paris for an emergency meeting on Ukraine’s future. Last week, the US administration began direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and indicated that Europe would be excluded from the negotiations. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded by urging European nations to strengthen their own positions, acknowledging some alignment with the US while stressing that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security. However, she reaffirmed that Russia remains the primary threat to European stability.

A recent NATO report ranked Denmark as the top military aid donor to Ukraine relative to GDP, a fact Poulsen highlighted as a demonstration of Denmark’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. Following a high-level meeting in Brussels, he also noted that Denmark and the US hold differing views on Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
