Contracts Signed for Major Seawater Desalination Plants in Three Algerian Wilayas

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, presided on Monday over the signing ceremony for the contracts to build three new seawater desalination plants in the Wilayas of Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the Algerian Water Desalination Company (ADC), a branch of Sonatrach, and the Algerian Water Company (ADE).

This comes within the framework of implementing the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at strengthening national water security and ensuring the regular supply of drinking water, according to a statement by the Algerian Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines.

These structural projects fall within the first phase of the second supplementary national program, approved by the President of the Republic, which includes the construction of six major seawater desalination plants, each with a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. This will contribute to increasing the national capacity for producing desalinated water to 5.6 million cubic meters per day by 2030, the statement said.

In this context, the Algerian Seawater Desalination Company, as a branch of the Sonatrach Group, will oversee the implementation of these projects, while the construction work has been entrusted to leading national companies, the source added.

These projects are expected to contribute to strengthening sustainable water security and improving public water services, in addition to creating a significant number of direct and indirect jobs, and supporting training programs, knowledge transfer, and the development of national expertise in the field of seawater desalination, in line with the national vision for sustainable development, according to the statement.
