China Enacts Energy Law to Promote Carbon Neutrality

China has enacted a new energy law aimed at advancing carbon neutrality, as reported by state media. This marks a significant step in the nation’s ambitious commitment to decarbonize its economy by 2060.
This announcement, covered by the official Xinhua News Agency, came during a session of the country’s top legislative body in Beijing this week, which is discussing a series of new laws and economic support measures.
The official agency stated that officials “voted for the adoption” of the energy law on Friday, emphasizing that it would “actively promote…carbon neutrality.”
According to Xinhua, the law is designed to “encourage high-quality energy development, ensure national energy security, promote green and low-carbon transformation, and support sustainable economic and social development.”
Furthermore, the agency noted that the legislation includes provisions concerning the planning, development, and utilization of energy, and is also intended to address the needs of building a modern socialist country comprehensively.
“The energy law is based on the actual endowments of our country’s energy resources and is adapted to the new context of energy development,” Xinhua added.
