Chad Receives Final French Military Base in N’Djamena

The French military withdrawal from Chad was completed this week, marking the end of an era of military cooperation between the two nations. The Chadian Army General Staff announced the return of the last French military base in the capital, N’Djamena, following the termination of the defense cooperation agreement. All French troops and equipment have been sent back to France. Approximately 1,000 French soldiers were stationed in Chad until recently. France had already vacated its bases in Faya-Largeau in northern Chad and in Abeche by January 11. During a ceremony in Abeche, Chadian authorities emphasized that the military pullout was non-negotiable, with President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno noting that military agreements with France are now outdated, reflecting the changing political and geostrategic landscape.
