Attaf Calls for Stronger Role of Developing Countries at G77 Meeting

Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, stressed that the Algiers Charter of 1964 remains a guiding framework for cooperation and coordination among developing countries, reaffirming its role as a foundation for solidarity and joint action on the global stage.
Building on this, he stated that current challenges require intensifying efforts to advance the priorities of developing nations across four key areas. First, in the field of sustainable development, he highlighted the need to reaffirm the unified position expressed at the UN Conference on Financing for Development, particularly regarding the urgent necessity of establishing fairer and more effective international commitments.
Second, on reforming global governance, he called for a renewed push to ensure fair representation of developing countries in all international institutions, whether economic, political, monetary, or trade-related. Third, concerning the environment, he stressed the importance of upholding the principle of common but differentiated responsibility in addressing the challenges of climate change, noting that developing countries remain the least responsible for this phenomenon while suffering most from its consequences.
Finally, on technology and knowledge transfer, the minister emphasized the need to secure concrete measures enabling developing nations to participate in ongoing revolutions in digitalization, robotics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. He underlined that these transformative fields will inevitably reshape the global economy, making it essential that developing countries are not excluded from their benefits.
