Attaf and Beissat Praise Resolution 2797 for Upholding Fair Solution Principles in Western Sahara

ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Monday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat.

During this meeting, the discussions between the two parties focused on reviewing and assessing the outcomes of the talks held in October at the UN Security Council regarding the Western Sahara issue, and the results of these discussions which led to the adoption of Resolution No. 2797, aimed at renewing the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

In this context, the two ministers welcomed the fact that the adopted resolution maintains the principles and foundations of a fair, lasting, and definitive solution to the Western Sahara conflict, and in particular, its focus on the necessity of conducting negotiations between the parties to this conflict, namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, and its affirmation that the solution must be acceptable to both parties, as well as its insistence that this solution should enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, the statement said, adding that the two ministers also welcomed the renewal of MINURSO’s mandate for one year, in line with the proposal submitted by the UN Secretary-General to the Security Council on this matter.

In light of these developments, the two ministers exchanged views on the prospects of the UN-sponsored political process, aimed at enabling the parties to the conflict to reach a fair, lasting, and definitive settlement of the Western Sahara issue, in a manner that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant decisions of international legitimacy and the United Nations’ established principles regarding the decolonization process, the statement concluded.
