At Least 90 Dead in Indonesia as Floods Hit Southeast Asia

The death toll from floods sweeping Southeast Asia rose again Friday, with at least 90 people dead in Indonesia and 55 in Thailand.

In Indonesia’s vast archipelago — as well as neighboring Malaysia and Thailand — the same scenes are unfolding: flooded cities, people trapped by water, and landslides triggered by the deluge that has battered the region for days.

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra (west), floods and landslides caused at least 90 deaths and left dozens missing, according to the latest official tolls.

In southern Thailand — one of the hardest hit — floods forced residents of the city of Hat Yai to cling to rooftops while waiting to be rescued by boat.

At least 55 people died in the province of Songkhla, where the main morgue receiving flood victims has been overwhelmed, a representative of the local hospital said Friday.
