Algerian Secretary of State for Energy Attends 4th International Mining Meeting in Riyadh

The Secretary of State for Energy, responsible for Mining, Karima Tafer, attended the 4th International Ministerial Meeting on Mining Affairs held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During this event, she outlined the key components of Algeria’s mineral sector development program, as stated in a communiqué from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies on Wednesday.

In her address delivered on Tuesday, part of the international mining conference, Tafer emphasized Algeria’s dedication to advancing the mining sector and optimizing the utilization of its mineral resources. She highlighted the significance of developing this sector, which serves as a foundational pillar for achieving sustainable economic growth, according to the communiqué.

After stressing the necessity for sustainable and responsible investment in these natural resources, in line with international environmental standards, the Secretary of State presented Algeria’s strategies aimed at enhancing mining infrastructure and bolstering international collaboration in the exploration and production of minerals.

She also noted Algeria’s proactive role in expediting the implementation of exploration and production projects while adhering to sustainability standards, striving to harmonize industrial advancement with environmental protection.

The Algerian delegation at the meeting, led by Tafer, included the CEO of the Sonarem group, Belkacem Soltani, along with officials from the ministry and Sonarem.

Representatives from 89 countries participated in the meeting, including 16 G20 nations, alongside delegates from 50 official and non-governmental international organizations and trade federations.

The opening session was chaired by the Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar Bin Ibrahim Al-Khorayef, who underscored the importance of international collaboration in tackling the challenges faced by the mining and minerals sectors. He stressed the urgent need to enhance transparency and sustainability in the industry while promoting investments in modern infrastructure and technologies.

During this gathering, several significant initiatives were proposed to foster cooperation between mineral-producing and consuming countries, as well as to encourage technological innovation within the sector, concluded the communiqué.
