Algerian President stresses need to launch Oued Amizour mine next March

The Algerian President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and Minister of Defense, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasized during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on the need to launch the zinc and lead mine at Oued Amizour in Bejaia province next March.
“The President of the Republic stressed the need to start this promising economic project in March 2026, given the jobs and economic benefits it will provide to the region specifically and to Algeria overall,” the Algerian Council of Ministers said in a statement on Sunday.
After listening to a presentation on progress in the mining railway project for Bled El Hadba – Oued El Keberit – Annaba Port, the President affirmed that “the State’s investment in the mining sector aims to lay new foundations and resources for the national economy in the coming phases and for the benefit of generations to come.”
The Algerian President ordered the Minister of Public Works to submit monthly progress reports on the project, stressing that work must be completed by the end of 2026 and operations must begin in the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, in order to boost Algeria’s fertilizer production capacity.
He also instructed the Government on “the need for daily monitoring of the project and removing all obstacles facing it, so that work proceeds at maximum speed without interruption,” the statement said.
Concerning the mining terminal as part of Annaba Port’s expansion, President Tebboune ordered coordination between the Public Works, Interior, and Transport sectors and the foreign partner to double the pace and finish the project by end-2026, since it is “part of the economic transformation strategy and breaking free from hydrocarbon dependency,” the source added.
