Algerian FM Discusses Wars, Geneva Conventions in New York

the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, took part in a debate in New York centered on wars and the Geneva Conventions. This event was organized at the initiative of Algeria and the Kingdom of Norway, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Peace Institute, according to a communiqué from the Ministry.

The discussion aimed to explore “ways to better enforce the four Geneva Conventions adopted 75 years ago, particularly in light of the blatant violations of their provisions occurring in various wars and conflicts around the globe,” the statement noted.

In this context, Minister Ahmed Attaf’s participation provided an opportunity to reaffirm Algeria’s commitment to the principles and foundations of international humanitarian law. He also highlighted the significant and existential challenges that impede the implementation of the Geneva Conventions in numerous conflict zones worldwide. These challenges include the genocidal war against the Palestinian people, escalating tensions in Lebanon and the region, as well as various crises across Africa, where defenseless civilians continue to suffer.
