Algerian Army Foils Attempts to Smuggle Over 4 Quintals of Cannabis from Morocco

ALGIERS – The Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) successfully thwarted attempts to smuggle 4.78 quintals of processed cannabis across the borders with Morocco during operations carried out between July 30 and August 5, in coordination with various security services, according to the ANP’s latest operational report published on Wednesday.

“As part of ongoing efforts in the fight against terrorism and various forms of organized crime, ANP units and detachments conducted several high-impact operations during the period from July 30 to August 5, 2025,” the report stated. These operations “reflect the high level of professionalism, vigilance, and constant readiness of our Armed Forces across the national territory.”

In counterterrorism efforts, ANP detachments discovered and destroyed 12 terrorist hideouts and 13 homemade mines in Khenchela. Additionally, five individuals suspected of supporting terrorist groups were arrested in various operations across the country.

In the context of combating organized crime and continuing efforts to counter drug trafficking, combined ANP detachments—working closely with various security services—intercepted 41 drug traffickers. They also blocked attempts to smuggle 4 quintals and 78 kilograms of processed cannabis from the Moroccan border and seized a total of 1,150,627 psychotropic tablets.

In the southern regions of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, In Guezzam, and Djanet, ANP units arrested 146 individuals and confiscated 23 vehicles, 150 power generators, 107 jackhammers, 65 metal detectors, along with quantities of raw gold mixed with stones and other equipment used in illegal gold panning operations.

Furthermore, six other individuals were apprehended, and authorities seized three Kalashnikov-type submachine guns, four hunting rifles, 32,060 liters of fuel, and 14 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation in separate operations.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard thwarted attempts at illegal migration along the national coastline and rescued 20 individuals aboard makeshift boats. Additionally, 276 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were apprehended across the national territory, the report concluded.
