ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, held a meeting in Geneva (Switzerland) with the Director General of the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Jean Kaseya, during which they reiterated their commitment to strengthening health cooperation across the African continent, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The meeting, which took place on Tuesday on the sidelines of Saihi’s participation in the 78th World Health Organization (WHO) Assembly, was an opportunity “to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Algeria and Africa CDC,” the same source added.
In this regard, the minister recalled “the strategic importance Algeria attaches to the International Vaccination and Tropical Disease Control Center, located in Tamanrasset,” which serves as “a central structure for health security in the Sahel region.”
Moreover, Saihi reiterated Algeria’s request to the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to support its initiative to host the African Center of Excellence in terms of preventive activities, in line with Algeria’s pioneering role in strengthening public health both regionally and continentally.
For his part, Kaseya praised “Algeria’s efforts in disease control and prevention,” expressing “the center’s commitment to continue coordination and technical assistance to implement projects of common interest.”
Both parties reaffirmed “their common commitment to strengthen health cooperation across the African continent, in order to develop preventive healthcare systems serving the peoples of the region.”
