Algeria Ready to Aid Upcoming Peacebuilding Framework Review

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf participated in the UN Peacebuilding Commission ministerial meeting held on Thursday evening in New York.
In his address at the meeting, Attaf expressed Algeria’s willingness to contribute to the forthcoming review of the peacebuilding framework. He emphasized the need to enhance and clarify the framework while addressing its shortcomings to ensure that the Commission aligns with the aspirations of all nations, particularly those affected by conflict.
The minister highlighted the importance of this gathering, stating, “It comes at a timely moment, building on the momentum generated by the ‘Future Summit’ and reaffirming our collective commitment to uphold the United Nations Charter as members of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Security Council.”
He further remarked, “We are convinced that the Peacebuilding Commission possesses the potential to serve as a powerful tool for effectively preventing conflicts and intervening in post-conflict situations for reconstruction.”
Attaf continued, “Moreover, we must not lose sight of the reasons for establishing this Commission and its ultimate objective of providing strategic advice to both the General Assembly and the Security Council. Therefore, we require enhanced communication between the Commission and these two major UN bodies,” stressing the necessity for this dialogue to focus primarily on long-term strategies rather than short-term crisis management. He added, “We want to emphasize the strategic significance of strengthening partnerships between the Peacebuilding Commission and the African Union’s Security Council,” explaining that “these partnerships are essential to ensuring the success of our collaborative efforts in promoting security and peace, in accordance with Chapter VIII of the UN Charter.”
Attaf also announced to the attendees that Algeria would make a voluntary contribution of $100,000 to the Peacebuilding Fund for South Sudan.
