ALGIERS – Algeria’s national police successfully foiled a plot orchestrated by French intelligence services aimed at destabilizing the country. The plan involved recruiting a young Algerian man, who had grown up abroad, to serve France’s hostile objectives. In response, Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned French Ambassador Stéphane Romatet to formally protest France’s repeated provocations and interference. This diplomatic move underscores Algeria’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty from external actions deemed adversarial.
The plot was exposed through an investigative documentary aired by Algerian state television, titled “Failure of the Conspiracy: Algeria’s Hawks Triumph.” The documentary revealed that France’s Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) had been covertly attempting to recruit individuals of Algerian descent to undermine the country. One such individual, Mohamed Amine Aissaoui, recounted how he had been targeted by French intelligence after a tumultuous past involving terrorism. Aissaoui, originally from Tipaza, was manipulated into joining a terrorist group while living in Spain and later fought in Syria and Iraq. Upon his return to Algeria, he served a prison sentence and was reintegrated into society.
However, after his release, Aissaoui found himself in the crosshairs of French intelligence once again. In 2022, he was contacted by the French association “Artémis,” led by individuals with connections to France’s Ministry of Interior. The association attempted to recruit him for covert operations, including gathering intelligence in Algeria. Aissaoui, recognizing the intentions of the French agents, collaborated with Algeria’s security services, who were able to monitor and thwart the plot.
The Algerian government has since issued a stern warning to French authorities, holding them accountable for their continued interference in Algeria’s internal matters. Officials emphasized that any further provocations would lead to a decisive response from the Algerian government. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the two countries and reveals the depth of foreign influence attempts aimed at Algeria’s stability.
