Algeria: FM Ahmed Attaf holds several bilateral meetings in New York

ALGIERS – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held several bilateral meetings in New York, according to a statement from the ministry.

During these meetings, FM Attaf spoke with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the UN Senior Humanitarian Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, Yemen’s Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen Al-Zindani, Ivory Coast’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Léon Kacou Adom, Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations Lejeune Mbella Mbella, the Central African Republic’s Foreign Minister Sylvie Baïpo-Temon, Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin, and Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

The discussion between FM Attaf and the Arab League Secretary-General focused on developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the Middle East, in light of the ongoing “genocidal war against the Palestinian people” and the escalation of Zionist attacks in the region, as stated in the release. The Secretary-General praised Algeria’s active role as an Arab member of the UN Security Council in defending the central cause of the Arab nation.

In his meeting with the Senior Humanitarian Coordinator for Gaza, both parties reviewed the tragic humanitarian situation caused by the continuous Zionist aggression and the ongoing blockade on the Palestinian people in the Strip. Accordingly, they discussed ways to mobilise further international efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and bring it to an end.

Discussions with Yemen’s Foreign Minister cantered on the developments of the Yemeni crisis and the situation in the Red Sea, emphasising the importance of Algeria’s commitment, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, to support the security and stability of Yemen and defend its sovereignty.

FM Attaf also discussed with Ivory Coast’s Foreign Minister ways to strengthen bilateral relations and reviewed the political and security developments in the Sahelo-Saharan region.

The Foreign Minister congratulated his Cameroonian counterpart on Cameroon’s presidency of the current session of the UN General Assembly, held by former Prime Minister Philémon Yang. During this meeting, both parties examined prospects for developing bilateral cooperation and various issues at the African Union level.

The meeting with the Central African Republic’s Foreign Minister focused on strengthening bilateral relations and consolidating coordination between the two countries at the African level.

Additionally, FM Attaf and the Vietnamese Foreign Minister agreed on the need to revitalise the friendly relations and cooperation between their countries, particularly through high-level visits, the scheduling of the Algerian-Vietnamese joint commission, political consultations between their foreign ministries, and increased contacts between business people and economic operators.

Regarding discussions with the Irish Deputy Prime Minister, the statement indicated that they focused on consolidating bilateral relations and enhancing coordination on international and regional issues of common interest.

Finally, the Foreign Minister discussed with his Armenian counterpart the developments in the Middle East and their implications for the international relations system, as concluded in the statement.
