The inaugural edition of the African School Games will kick off with its opening ceremony on Saturday, July 26, starting at 8:00 PM at the 19-May-1956 Stadium in Annaba, according to a report from the organizers.
“Access to the stadium will begin at 6:00 PM, and entry will be free. Families are warmly invited to attend this celebration,” the source detailed.
The event promises “a grand spectacle” featuring various activities and exhibitions leading up to the start of the competition, which is set to continue until August 5.
Approximately 1,761 athletes, comprising 1,064 boys and 697 girls, representing 50 countries, are expected to compete in Algeria across 25 sports disciplines during this first edition of the African School Games, taking place in the cities of Constantine, Annaba, Sétif, and Skikda.
Held under the high patronage of the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, these Games are a collaborative initiative between the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the International School Sport Federation (ISF), established following an agreement signed during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The primary goal of this inaugural edition of the JAS is to act as a catalyst for promoting school sports throughout Africa while providing a platform for interaction among the continent’s youth. According to ANOCA, these Games embody an ambitious vision: to showcase sporting and cultural excellence for African youth. They represent a genuine springboard for the champions of tomorrow in Africa.
