Algeria Voices “Concern” Over Situation in Caribbean Region, Calls to Avoid Escalation

Algeria has expressed “deep concern” over the situation in the region of Caribbean, following “actions against Venezuelan oil tankers,” calling all parties to prevent an escalation of tensions.

“Algeria, deep concern, is closely following recent developments in the Caribbean region,” particularly regarding reports of actions directly targeting Venezuelan oil tankers,” said on Tuesday the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations (UN), Amar Bendjama.

“These developments raise serious concerns and risk aggravating tensions in an already fragile regional context,” added the diplomat during a Security Council meeting devoted to threats to international peace and security.

“Algeria emphasizes the need to avoid any action that could lead to escalation or confrontation,” said Bendjama.

In this respect, he called for respect of the United Nations Charter which defines the fundamental principles governing peaceful relations between States. Principles which include respect for “sovereign equality, self-determination of peoples, territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs and peaceful settlement of disputes,” he emphasized.

“We urge all concerned actors to show restraint and avoid any action or rhetoric likely to aggravate tensions or deepen divisions,” he said.

He further stressed that “dialogue and diplomacy remain the best, even the only ways capable of resolving disagreements and preserving peace and stability in the region.” Algeria recalled the importance of maintaining Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, “as proclaimed by the States of the region eleven years ago.” In this respect, Algeria encourages the organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean to play a constructive role in creating an environment fostering dialogue and mediation efforts.

Combating drug trafficking and transnational organized crime represents common challenges, particularly in this region, noted Bendjama, stressing that addressing these issues demands international cooperation grounded in mutual respect and solidarity rather than confrontation and polarization.

“Algeria calls on all parties to adhere to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter,” he said.

“History has repeatedly demonstrated that war and military intervention did not lead to lasting peace, quite the contrary. The only viable path is that of diplomacy, cooperation and respect for international law,” he concluded.
