UNGA: Algeria Presents 2020-2030 National Climate Plan

Algeria’s Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, presented Algeria’s 2020-2030 National Climate Plan (NPC) during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York (Sept 22-29), the ministry said Thursday.

Saihi stressed that the plan represents an “effective strategy aligned with national priorities, while taking into account Algeria’s international commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and related agreements.”

The national contribution, he explained, focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. Key programs include the reconstruction of the Green Dam, described as a regional and international ecological reference.

Algeria has also expanded renewable energy programs, with solar power capacity exceeding 3,200 MW and plans to generate 1,000 MW from wind energy, alongside major investments in water desalination plants worth more than USD 7 billion over the past five years.

Saihi stressed that global climate policies must reflect the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities,” ensuring that national priorities and development needs are respected.

He urged developed countries to meet their financial commitments to developing nations, given their limited resources and minimal contribution to global emissions.

The minister reaffirmed Algeria’s “firm commitment to collective climate action,” particularly in the lead-up to the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil, where Algeria aims to contribute to building a fair, effective and sustainable global climate policy.
