The Sahrawi Government Strongly Condemns Morocco’s Misrepresentations Before the UN General Assembly

The Sahrawi Government issued a statement strongly condemning the speech delivered by the Prime Minister of Morocco before the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

In its press release, the Sahrawi Government said the Moroccan regime’s remarks once again confirmed its lack of political will to comply with United Nations and African Union decisions on achieving a peaceful, just, and lasting solution to the decolonization of Western Sahara, Africa’s last remaining colony. The statement described Morocco as a “brutal occupying power” persisting in defiance of international legality and resolutions.

The Sahrawi Government stressed that Western Sahara has been recognized by the UN as a decolonization issue since 1963, affirming the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence in line with UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV). It reiterated that any solution must respect the Sahrawi people’s free will, calling other alternatives “categorically unacceptable.”

The press release recalled that the 1988 UN-OAU Settlement Plan—accepted by both Morocco and the Polisario Front and endorsed by the UN Security Council through Resolutions 658 (1990) and 690 (1991)—remains the only viable framework. This plan also led to the creation of MINURSO, tasked with implementing a referendum on self-determination.

Condemning Morocco’s “expansionist and colonialist agenda,” the Sahrawi Government urged the international community, led by the UN, to respond firmly to Morocco’s defiance of international law, including the prohibition of acquiring territory by force.

The statement concluded that Morocco and its supporters “cannot turn back the wheel of history,” reaffirming that the Sahrawi people remain determined to continue their struggle until achieving full independence and sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
