At least 15 individuals have perished in a hotel fire in Calcutta, located in northeastern India, police announced on Wednesday.

“Several people were rescued from their rooms and the rooftop of the hotel,” Calcutta’s police chief, Manoj Verma, stated to the press. The fire broke out on Tuesday evening and is now under control; it has resulted in “at least 15 casualties,” he added.

According to the Press Trust of India, which obtained footage of the hotel engulfed in flames, “several people were seen trying to escape through the windows and narrow ledges of the building.” The Calcutta-based newspaper The Telegraph reported that at least one person died after “jumping from the terrace while attempting to flee.”
