Algeria Grants Italy’s BF SPA 36,000-Hectare Agricultural Project

Algeria’s Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries granted an investment contract to the Italian company BF SPA on Thursday in Algiers. The project aims to develop an integrated agricultural system for grain, legumes, and pasta production in the Timimoun province.
During a ceremony at the ministry’s headquarters, Agriculture Minister Youcef Cherfa officially handed over the contract to BF Algeria Chairman Mostafa El-Houari. The large-scale project spans 36,000 hectares in Timimoun’s Grand Périmètre 01, focusing on wheat, lentils, dried beans, chickpeas, and oilseed crops such as soybeans. Additionally, the initiative includes processing units for pasta production, grain storage silos, and other essential infrastructure.
With a total investment of $420 million, the project aims to boost Algeria’s domestic grain and legume production while supporting non-hydrocarbon exports through pasta exports. It is also expected to create over 6,700 jobs. This initiative is part of a strategic partnership between BF Group and the Algerian state, represented by the National Investment Fund, under a framework agreement signed in July 2024. The project aligns with Algeria’s national food security strategy, focusing on the development of key agricultural sectors such as cereals, legumes, oilseeds, and dairy production.
