Trump Calls Zelenskyy a “Dictator Without Elections” Amid Escalating Rift Over Russia Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to proceed with elections, further escalating tensions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Washington engages in peace talks with Russia without Kyiv’s involvement. Trump questioned Ukraine’s decision to delay elections under martial law, citing concerns over financial transparency.

He also emphasized ongoing negotiations with Moscow, stating that he could achieve a peace deal that Zelenskyy failed to secure. Trump’s remarks align with recent U.S.-Russia discussions in Saudi Arabia, where officials agreed to further talks on ending the war and improving bilateral ties.

Zelenskyy has strongly opposed the U.S. approach, dismissing Trump’s claims that Ukraine started the war and accusing him of spreading Russian disinformation. Responding to Trump’s allegations about misallocated U.S. aid, Zelenskyy clarified that Ukraine has only received a portion of the funds allocated by Congress.

Trump, in turn, labeled Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections” and suggested Russia holds leverage due to its territorial gains. He further hinted at reviving a stalled critical minerals deal, implying that his plans may not be favorable for Kyiv.

The dispute underscores a widening divide between Trump and Zelenskyy, with implications for U.S. policy on Ukraine. Trump’s remarks reflect a shift in American diplomatic priorities, focusing on direct engagement with Moscow. As Kyiv remains excluded from peace negotiations, tensions are expected to rise, particularly as Trump seeks to reshape U.S.-Ukraine relations and revive economic agreements tied to military aid.
