Trump Suggests Making Canada the 51st State to Cut Costs for Canadians

US President-elect Donald Trump proposed making Canada the 51st state of the United States, claiming it would significantly reduce costs for Canadians, including savings on taxes and military protection.

Trump questioned why the US subsidizes Canada to the tune of over $100 million annually and suggested that many Canadians would welcome the idea. His comments were shared on Truth Social, where he also joked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau being the “governor” of the “Great State of Canada.”

Trump’s remarks come amid tensions over trade, as he announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico upon taking office, citing unresolved issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In response, Prime Minister Trudeau warned of retaliatory measures if the tariffs were imposed, indicating a growing trade dispute between the two nations.
