Mexico: Law on electing judges enacted

MEXICO – Outgoing Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador signed into law a decree for the election of all judges and magistrates by “popular vote.”
“I am signing the decree to publish the constitutional reform aimed at improving the judiciary,” said President López Obrador in a video.
The video shows him signing the document with the future president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1 after winning the June 2 elections.
Both are representatives of the Morena party, which holds more than a two-thirds majority in the Chamber of Deputies and is only one vote short in the Senate.
“We need justice to reach everyone, with no corruption in the judiciary, where judges, magistrates, and ministers apply the principle that no one is above the law,” he said from the National Palace.
The outgoing president advocated for “a true rule of law” as he signed the decree as the country celebrated its national Independence Day.
