UN Convention on Cybercrime: Another Algerian Diplomatic Feat

Algerian diplomacy has once again scored a significant victory on the international stage under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. On Thursday, efforts culminated in the adoption of a United Nations Convention aimed at combating cybercrime, marking another notable achievement for the nation.

This new convention, endorsed by the Intergovernmental Committee responsible for drafting a comprehensive international treaty to combat the criminal use of information and communication technologies, was chaired by Algerian ambassador Faouzia Mebarki. The successful adoption of the convention represents a major triumph following three years of intense negotiations involving all member states.

Since its election in May 2021, the Algerian presidency of the Committee has worked tirelessly to reconcile the differing viewpoints of various member states. Over eight negotiation sessions, punctuated by intensive consultations led by Ambassador Mebarki and her team, they navigated numerous challenges posed by influential actors including the United States, China, Russia, the European Union (EU), India, Brazil, South Africa, and other nations.

Ultimately, Algerian diplomatic efforts were rewarded with the unanimous adoption of the full text of the UN Convention, despite some requests for votes on specific points. This outcome surpassed expectations, given the contentious nature of the agreement’s subject matter and the complexities of the current international landscape.

Immediately following the adoption of the Convention, participating states lauded the high level of professionalism and impartiality demonstrated by the Algerian presidency during this intricate negotiation process.
