Des gerbes de fleurs ont été déposées devant le mémorial du génocide à Kigali, capitale du Rwanda. Cette cérémonie a ouvert une série d’événements consacrés à la mémoire des victimes du génocide qui avait eu lieu il y a trente ans dans ce pays africain. C’est ce qu’a fait savoir le quotidien rwandais New Times.
Plusieurs chefs d’État et de gouvernement ont participé à la cérémonie de la déposition de fleurs devant le mémorial du génocide où sont enterrées plus de 250.000 victimes. La cérémonie a été guidée par le président rwandais Paul Kagame.
En cent jours du génocide qui avait été organisé par les autorités du pays ont été exterminés entre 800.000 et 1,1 million de Tutsis. Selon le recensement de 1991, les Tutsis constituaient 8,4% de la population rwandaise qui atteignait à l’époque 7,5 millions. Les Hutus qui tentaient d’aider les Tutsis ont été tués également.
L’Assemblée générale des Nations unies a adopté en 2003 la résolution proclamant le 7 avril Journée internationale de réflexion sur le génocide au Rwanda.
