Togo Extends State of Emergency in Northern Region for One Year

LOME, March 7, 2025 – The state of emergency currently in effect in the Savanes region (north), originally set to expire on March 13, has been extended for an additional year, according to local media reports.

“The deputies of the first legislature have overwhelmingly approved a law in Lomé permitting the extension of the state of emergency in the Savanes for a period of 12 months starting from March 13,” reported the Togolese Press Agency, ATOP.

During the second plenary session of its first extraordinary session, the National Assembly granted approval for this new extension requested by the government, the same source added.

The President of the National Assembly, Kodjo Sevon-Tépé Adédzé, quoted by ATOP, stated that this decision, “made responsibly, is primarily aimed at ensuring the safety of the populations in this region, who are facing a persistent threat related to terrorism and cross-border insecurity.”

This marks the fourth extension since the implementation of this measure, following previous extensions in September 2022, April 2023, and March 2024.
