Sudan’s Sovereign Council Leader Rejects Return to Pre-War Status with RSF

Sudan’s Sovereign Council leader, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has declared that a return to the pre-war status with the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is impossible.

Speaking on Tuesday in a televised address to mark the 69th anniversary of Sudan’s independence, Al-Burhan emphasized that the situation could not go back to what it was before the outbreak of conflict in April 2023.

While firmly rejecting the return of RSF forces to the Sudanese fold, Al-Burhan expressed his willingness to engage in any genuine initiative aimed at ending the war and ensuring the safe return of civilians to their homes.

He referred to the RSF as “murderers, criminals, and their supporters,” blaming the militia for the widespread violence, starvation, and displacement faced by Sudanese citizens.

The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army, led by Al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has claimed the lives of nearly 25,000 people and displaced over 10 million since April 2023.

Despite mediation efforts by countries like the US and Saudi Arabia, a ceasefire has yet to be achieved, with both sides accusing each other of hindering peace talks.
