Starmer Vows ‘Cool and Calm’ Response to Trump’s Tariffs, Leaves Retaliation Open

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured that the UK government will respond with “cool and calm heads” to new US tariffs, emphasizing that Britain is prepared for the economic impact. Speaking to business leaders at Downing Street, he acknowledged the challenges posed by President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on UK imports starting Saturday but did not rule out retaliatory measures.
While expressing hope for negotiations to ease or remove the tariffs, Starmer insisted that any economic agreement must serve Britain’s national interests. He stated that the UK would act independently, prioritizing its economy over alliance politics. “Last night, the president of the US acted for his country. Today, I will act in Britain’s interests,” he declared, highlighting a shift in the UK-US relationship.
Trump justified the sweeping tariffs, which also hit the EU with 20% duties and China with 54%, as a “declaration of economic independence.” The White House stated that the tariffs would remain in effect until concerns over trade deficits and “nonreciprocal treatment” were addressed. Despite the UK being spared the highest rates, Starmer underscored that all policy decisions in the coming weeks would be based solely on Britain’s national interest.
