Spain’s Foreign Minister Doubts Trump’s Claim to End Ukraine War in 24 Hours

Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Luis Albares, has cast doubt on US President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated assertion that he could end the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours, calling it unrealistic. During his election campaign, Trump had claimed that, if elected, he could bring about an immediate ceasefire and end the conflict within a single day. However, Albares emphasized that such a promise is impossible unless Russian President Vladimir Putin is genuinely willing to negotiate peace, which he does not believe to be the case.
Albares highlighted the stark reality of the war, stating that peace cannot be achieved “in 24 hours” under the current circumstances, primarily due to Putin’s lack of interest in ending the aggression. He argued that any attempt to allow Russia to achieve its objectives would not only fail to bring peace but would also significantly destabilize global security.
While Trump’s proposal to end the war in a short timeframe may resonate with some, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has downplayed the claim, indicating that he does not take Trump’s campaign promise literally. Zelenskyy’s skepticism aligns with broader international concerns over the practicality of Trump’s proposal.
Interestingly, despite these concerns, a recent survey revealed that more than 44% of Ukrainians express trust in Donald Trump, a figure considerably higher than the trust shown by Europeans in the US President-elect. This demonstrates the complex and evolving perceptions of Trump’s foreign policy stance, particularly in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.
