Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and US Firm Hecate to Launch Green Hydrogen Project

ALGIERS – The Sonatrach group is preparing, in collaboration with the Sonelgaz group and the American renewable energy company Hecate, an integrated green hydrogen production project to meet the needs of the steel industry at the Tosyali complex, according to a statement from the public group.
This project was reviewed on Wednesday during a meeting held at the headquarters of Sonatrach’s general management, which brought together the Chairman and CEO of the group, Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Hecate, David William, Alp Topcuoglu, member of the Board of Directors of Tosyali Algeria, and senior executive officials.
The review of this “ambitious” project follows the results of studies and work carried out under the memorandums of understanding signed in 2024 between Sonatrach and the companies Hecate and Tosyali.
The memorandum of understanding signed with Hecate on April 29, 2024, includes a study for a renewable energy production project in Algeria, while the memorandum signed with Tosyali on July 24, 2024, provides for the development of a feasibility study for the production of hydrogen in Algeria from renewable energies, for the manufacture of “green steel” at the company’s industrial complex.
The Sonatrach group said in its statement that a new memorandum of understanding will be signed with Sonelgaz, Hecate, and Tosyali for the implementation of this integrated project in two phases.
